You and Your Profession- Ch 1 Focus Questions

1. Being a teacher comes with various advantages and disadvantages. Certain advantages are the daily and yearly schedule. Not only is it great to have summers off to focus on planning and professional development for a new year, but many schools get out anywhere between 2-3:30, allowing for teachers to have the whole afternoon to run errands or get things done. More benefits include getting to work with wonderful kids and seeing them grow personally and academically. Disadvantages can include lack of respect towards our hard work, lack of support from parents and/or administration, and lack of motivation from students.

2. Some complaints from teachers today are low pay and the heavy workload that comes with the job (hours spent doing work after school). Many teachers today are satisfied with the jobs they have through cooperation from some great parents and administrators.

3. Teaching is 100% a profession. Just like any other profession, we attend school for 5+ years, even earning more than just a masters degree. We also have to take certification exams in order to qualify us for the profession. We attend seminars, research theories, and contribute to curriculum writing.

4. The teaching profession has changed vastly over the years, their is a much higher demand for teachers to meet certain standards. Even their students have to meet certain standards, now putting the blame on teachers of under any circumstances, the student does not meet that standard. teachers now must also become certified in multiple areas of the profession.

5. The National Education Association (NEA) is a very large professional association, it is also the oldest. The American Federation of Teachers (AFT) is much smaller and focuses on the labor movement.

6. There are many character traits that one needs to possess in order to be a successful teacher. A successful teacher needs empathy, good work ethic, a good sense of humor, resilience, and organization, just to name a few.

7. I think teaching is an excellent fit for me. I really could not imagine doing anything else. I love kids and I love the content that I teach. There is no job more fulfilling then the work of a teacher.

Upon self-assessment, I learned what my educational philosophy really is. My philosophy follows the Behaviorism approach. Behaviorism  philosophy involves shaping our ideas by determination and forces in the environment. Learning occurs through reinforcing and responses to stimuli. Digital Pedagogy

Digital pedagogy involves classroom practices that require the use of other forms of modern technology incorporated into instruction. 1. I have observed a few digital pedagogy assignments in the classroom. I have seen students use social media as a form of classroom instruction and I have also seen virtual classrooms used. Interactive maps have become popular in social studies classrooms, and students are keeping up with classroom happenings and announcements through sites like Edmodo or Google Classroom. 2. For the teacher who is cautious about incorporating digital pedagogy, there are many ways to incorporate it in small ways. You can start by using blogging assignments in the classroom. Digital Age Education

1. What diverse learners are there in today's classroom? In today's class, we see a spectrum of different learners. We as teachers need to adapt and plan accordingly to the types of students that we have. We will get all different kinds of students who come into our classrooms. These students may have all kinds of disabilities with different kinds of skills. We as teachers need to address these issues and personalize our learning so they can be successful in the classroom. 2. What does brain research provide to adjust their teaching in the digital age?
